  • Narcissistic abuse/ Narcissistic Victim Syndrome (NVS)

“Narcissistic abuse” refers to relationships — romantic or within family systems — marked by manipulation, deception, betrayal, sabotage, gaslighting, control, emotional neglect, or psychological or physical violence. These experiences are often subtle and gradual, happening behind closed doors, which makes them difficult for outsiders to recognize.”

After prolonged exposure to narcissistic abuse, many survivors develop a cluster of symptoms:
deep insecurity about themselves, confusion about what’s real, chronic fear, guilt or shame, difficulty setting boundaries, isolation, emotional and physical complaints, extreme fatigue or exhaustion, and depressive feelings. In some therapeutic settings, this cluster is referred to as Narcissistic Victim Syndrome (NVS).

Important: NVS is not an official diagnosis in current diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5.
But that does not diminish the reality of the pain or the impact it has. In mental health care, these symptoms are usually understood as trauma — and in cases of long-term, repeated psychological abuse, they often fit the picture of Complex PTSD.

    Tip:
Because it’s still under-recognized in mainstream mental health systems, your own acknowledgment — or that of a trusted therapist — becomes a crucial part of healing. Recovery starts with validation: your experiences are real, the inner scars are real, even if others say “it wasn’t that bad” or “you’re exaggerating.”
